4.78 Aerodrome Lighting

4.78.4 Describe the following lighting systems:

(a) Runway edge lighting (REDL);

Runway edge lighting helps pilots identify the lateral limits of the usable runway, particularly at night or in reduced visibility.

Runway edge lights:

• are fixed omni-directional lights;
• normally show white; and
• are positioned in two parallel rows along the edges of the runway.

(b) Runway landing threshold lighting (RTHL);

Runway threshold lighting identifies the beginning of the runway available for landing.

Runway threshold lights:

• are fixed uni-directional lights;
• show green towards an approaching aircraft; and
• are positioned across the landing threshold.

They may extend across the full width of the runway or have a clear gap near the centre.

(c) Runway end lighting (RENL);

Runway end lighting identifies the end of the runway available for use.
